James Evan Johnson
November 23, 1930
Officer Evan Johnson was eating at a restaurant when he was approached by a citizen
who said that a drunken man had cursed him and his wife. Officer Johnson could not find
the man. A second citizen made a similar complaint later. Officer Johnson received an
address where the man might be. Officer Johnson went to the address with several officers.
He knocked on the door and verbally identified himself as a police officer when asked who
he was. A man fired several shots from inside the house striking officer Johnson.
Gary D. Harl
July 16, 1975
Officer Gary Harl made a routine traffic stop at night for a simple traffic violation.
Officer Harl and the driver of the motorcycle were talking in the front seat of Officer
Harl's police car. The driver of the motorcycle suddenly reached toward the officer
pointing a pistol at the officer's head and shot him one time. Officer Harl was pronounced
dead at the hospital about one hour later.
Terry Lynn Lewis

Officers Lewis and Crocker were assisting the victim of a hit and run accident. They
both died after their patrol car was hit broadside by a person who was driving while
intoxicated.

Craig Hanking

Officer Hanking was enroute to a call and was involved in a traffic accident. He died
at the scene.

Officer Cushman passed away June 7, 2001 as a result of a tragic accident during a police training exercise.
Craig Story

Officer Craig Story, a seven year veteran, died as a result of a tragic motor
vehicle accident involving his police motorcycle near the intersection of South
Cooper Street and Inwood Drive.
Jillian Michelle Smith
December 28, 2010
Officer Jillian Michelle Smith was dispatched to take a report on an assault that was
called into 911 after the suspect had left the location. Officer Smith contacted the victim
and her 11-year-old daughter. While Officer Smith was interviewing the victim, the suspect
entered the apartment and displayed a gun. As the suspect began shooting, Officer Smith placed
herself between the suspect and the child and was fatally wounded.
