The Arlington Police Department is investigating an early morning officer-involved shooting. Shortly after 1 a.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2013, an officer assigned to the Traffic/DWI Unit was on patrol when he drove into the parking lot of 2400 E. Arkansas Lane. As the officer entered the parking lot, an armed security guard flagged the officer down and reported a disturbance occurring in the parking lot and nearby business location. About the same time, Arlington Police received a 911 call which reported that there was a large fight at a local bar involving more than 20 people.
As the officer exited his patrol vehicle, he saw a man discharging a firearm at the direction of a crowd of people which led to a confrontation between this armed man and the officer. The officer fired his weapon and struck the armed man who was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
As the preliminary investigation unfolds, detectives continue to interview witnesses and process the crime scene. As a standard matter of routine, the officer will be placed on administrative leave with pay while the agency conducts administrative and criminal investigations into this morning’s incident. The officer was not injured and we have no current reports that any other citizens were injured.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased once next of kin notifications have been made.
