Officer-involved shooting during tactical incident results in injured officer, deceased suspect

 
This evening an Arlington Police Officer was injured while assisting Fort Worth Police as they attempted to serve a felony warrant. Arlington Tactical Officer Bryan Graham was shot in the head after entering the apartment. He is expected to survive his injuries and is being cared for at a Fort Worth hospital. The suspect being sought was also shot during the incident and is deceased.

The Arlington Police Department was contacted by the Fort Worth Police Department regarding their attempt to apprehend a fugitive with an outstanding aggravated robbery warrant. They had located the suspect in an Arlington apartment in the 600 block of E. Arkansas Lane. Fort Worth officers were inside the apartment and had the suspect, later identified as Alexzander R. Coan, 23, cornered in a bedroom. There were two other women inside the apartment with him.

At about 7:15 p.m., shots were fired. Officer Graham was shot in the head above his right eyebrow after making entry. He was driven by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Coan was also shot and later died from his injuries. One of the women inside the apartment was injured but not shot as previously reported. She had abrasions and cuts.

Officer Graham is an 11-year veteran of the Arlington Police Department. He is a fulltime member of the Tactical Unit. The 35-year-old officer is also married with two children – ages 4 and 8. Shortly after the shooting, Officer Graham was conscious, talking and gave officers a thumbs up signal before being driven to the hospital.

At this point, there will an Internal Affairs investigation to look into the officer-involved shooting and a Homicide investigation to address the shooting of Coan. The investigations will be conducted independently. Investigators will talk to witnesses, officers and the people involved in the incident an effort to determine the circumstances of this incident.

6/6/2012 Suspect's girlfriend arrested, charged with aggravated kidnapping for holding victim in apartment
Officer Bryan Graham continues to receive medical care at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. His family remains by his side, along with members of his police family. Officers have been stopping by the hospital to visit Officer Graham throughout the day. He has been positive and in good spirits, even while dealing with the pain of his head injury.

This afternoon, a couple of officers will be available to speak to Media about Officer Graham. One of his classmates and a fellow tactical officer in his unit will be conducting interviews in the Arlington Police Department Media Office (620 W. Division Street) at 2:15 p.m. today.

As for the homicide investigation, officers stayed at the shooting scene through much of the night speaking with witnesses and collecting evidence. The Crime Scene Unit returned this morning to continue doing much of the same. Homicide detectives have talked to the witnesses and the women inside the apartment during the incident. Officers determined that one of the women in the apartment was the suspect’s girlfriend, identified as Jade Nycole Simon, 30, of Duncanville. Based on information gathered in the investigation, Simon has been charged with aggravated kidnapping. She also has outstanding warrants for traffic violations. Simon remains in the Arlington City Jail with bail set at $100,995. A photo of Simon is attached to this email.

The other woman inside the apartment was being held against her will. At this point in the investigation, her name is not being released.
